The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) reports steady progress in the country’s oil and gas exploration initiatives.
In Block 2913B (petroleum exploration license—PEL 56), TotalEnergies (50.5%, operator), QatarEnergy (30%), Impact Oil and Gas Namibia (9.5%), and Namcor (10%) are actively conducting post-well studies on the Venus wells. These analyses, involving core samples, logging data, and fluid samples, are projected to continue into 2025.
The joint venture is expediting development studies for the potential Venus project and began drilling the Tamboti-1X exploration well in October 2024. Drilling operations are currently underway, while technical evaluations of the block’s maturation and prospectivity continue for future exploration activities.
In Block 2813A (PEL 83), Galp (80%, operator), Namcor (10%), and Custos Energy Ltd (10%) successfully completed the Mopane-1A appraisal well in November 2024. The well encountered light oil and gas condensate in reservoirs with excellent porosity and low oil viscosity, confirming the quality of the AVO-1 reservoir alongside earlier findings from Mopane-1X and Mopane-2X.
The Mopane-2A well, drilled in December 2024, revealed gas condensate in AVO-3 and hydrocarbon liquids in AVO-4. As part of the ongoing exploration campaign, the Mopane-3X well spudded on January 2, 2025, and drilling operations are in progress. Meanwhile, the joint venture is conducting a high-resolution 3D seismic survey over the Mopane complex.
Chevron Namibia Exploration (80%, operator), Namcor (10%), and Trago (10%) recently completed the Kapana-1X exploration well in Block 2813B (PEL 90). Although the well did not find commercial hydrocarbons, it provided valuable insights into the basin’s geology, boosting confidence in future activities on PEL 90.
In Block 2914A (PEL 85), Rhino Resources (42.5%, operator), Azule Energy (42.5%), Namcor (10%), and Korres (5%) are advancing the Sagittarius-1X exploration well. The well, part of a multi-well program, spudded in December 2024 and is expected to be completed soon.
BW Kudu (95%, operator) and Namcor (5%, with an additional 5% back-in right) are making strides with the Kudu Gas-to-Power project in Block 2814A (Petroleum Production License 003). The joint venture plans to submit the field development plan to the Ministry of Mines and Energy by the second quarter of 2025 and is preparing for an appraisal drilling campaign later in the year.
In Block 2913A & 2914B (PEL 39), Shell Namibia (45%, operator), QatarEnergy (45%), and Namcor (10%) are progressing extensive post-well studies. These studies aim to analyze core samples and fluid data from the Jonker, Enigma, and Graph wells, enhancing the understanding of the reservoirs and identifying new opportunities. The studies are expected to continue through 2025.
