Tanzania’s government has awarded four new oil and gas exploration blocks to its state-owned oil company, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), as the country looks to expand its domestic energy production.
The blocks, Mnazi Bay North, West Songo Songo, Eyasi-Wembere and Lindi-Mtwara, have already undergone some initial exploration activities, including seismic surveys, according to TPDC Managing Director Mussa Makame.
Tanzania is also working to increase its energy output by advancing agreements for its proposed $42 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which the government aims to finalize in the coming months.
The country has also announced its first natural gas discovery in more than a decade, marking a new development in its upstream oil and gas sector.
The LNG project, led by Equinor and Shell, will supply most of its production to international markets, while reserving a portion for domestic consumption.
