Sintana Energy has extended its Petroleum Exploration License 79 (PEL 79) in Namibia’s Orange Basin by one year, now valid through July 2026. The extension covers exploration blocks 2815 and 2915 and was granted by Namibia’s Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy.
The license is held through a joint venture between NAMCOR and Giraffe Energy Investments, with NAMCOR operating the asset. Sintana holds an indirect 49% interest in Giraffe, giving it a significant stake in the license.
PEL 79 sits inland of blocks held by BW Energy, Rhino Resources, and Shell, and includes a strong base of existing seismic and drilling data. This includes nearly 5,000 kilometers of 2D seismic, over 1,100 square kilometers of 3D seismic, and a well that encountered gas in the Kudu source rock.
The block lies within a high-potential sub-basin that continues to see growing interest and investment. Rhino Resources’ nearby discovery at Capricornus-1X flowed over 11,000 barrels of light oil per day, and further drilling is scheduled at the Volans prospect in 2025.
BW Energy has also expanded activity close to PEL 79, acquiring new seismic on PEL 3 and planning to drill the Kharas well later this year.
Sintana’s leadership welcomed the extension, describing it as timely and strategic. They expect major developments across their offshore Namibian assets in the months ahead, with PEL 79 offering a strong opportunity for impactful progress.
