Rwanda announced its first oil discovery, identifying 13 reservoirs located in Lake Kivu, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Francis Kamanzi, the CEO of the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum, and Gas Board, shared this update with parliamentarians, celebrating the news that the country now possesses oil resources.
Local reports revealed that Kamanzi confirmed the presence of oil in 13 wells within Lake Kivu.
He emphasized the potential for further discoveries, citing the significant reserves already identified in neighboring Uganda and the DRC within the Great Lakes region.
Rwanda has actively tested and explored Lake Kivu for over a decade. Despite ongoing conflicts in the DRC, both nations have engaged in discussions about exploration in the area.
