Reconnaissance Energy Africa has issued an update on drilling progress at the Kavango West 1X exploration well in onshore Namibia.

The well has been drilled safely and efficiently to 4,158 metres, going beyond the originally planned total depth of 3,800 metres.

The well was spud on July 31, and operations moved ahead smoothly, reaching the initial target depth of 3,800 meters earlier than scheduled in the drilling program.

Drilling continued, and the well reached 4,158 meters on Friday, November 7.

The company applied for and received permission to extend drilling to about 4,200 meters after observing encouraging hydrocarbon indications.

Work paused at the current depth due to a drive shaft failure.

All parts needed for the repair have been obtained and are being transported to the drilling location.

Repair work is expected to be completed next week.

Once repairs are done, the company plans to keep drilling before starting extensive wireline logging that will include core and fluid sampling.

Results from the wireline logging are expected to be released before the end of the year.

The well has shown multiple oil indications as well as steady natural gas markers on mud logs throughout the Otavi reservoir section.

All hydrocarbon indications will need confirmation through wireline logging and fluid sampling.

Given the type of hydrocarbon signs observed, the company intends to carry out wireline testing and fluid sampling within the Otavi formation.
