The Environment Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF) is seeking consultancy bids to conduct feasibility studies for three hydrogen valleys identified in Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Strategy.

These hydrogen valleys, located in the Southern Region (Kharas), the Central Region (including Walvis Bay Port and the capital Windhoek), and the Northern Region (Kunene), will focus on producing ammonia, synthetic fuels, and hot briquetted iron.

The study’s scope encompasses several aspects, such as evaluating the renewable energy potential of each valley, assessing the total capacity for green hydrogen production, analyzing environmental considerations and impacts, determining the necessary infrastructure requirements and associated costs, examining the shared infrastructure needs and costs for development, conducting due diligence on land availability, and exploring green industrialization opportunities. The latter involves investigating the possibility of establishing dedicated green industrial zones within the valleys, where manufacturing can utilize surplus electrons from the hydrogen projects.

The deadline for bid submissions is June 2, 2023. The contract will be awarded within the same month, and the feasibility report is expected to be submitted within three months, as stated in the Request for Proposal (RFP) document. This project receives support from the Green Climate Fund, established under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and is implemented by the EIF through a Readiness Project Team in close collaboration with the Office of the President’s Performance Delivery Unit (PDU).

The EIF, a state-owned organization in Namibia, is responsible for mobilizing financial resources to directly invest in activities and projects related to environmental protection and natural resource management.
