Morocco plans to kick off construction this July on the $6 billion first phase of a major gas pipeline connecting its Mediterranean coast to Nigeria.

The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline will stretch over 5,000 kilometres, delivering natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco and several other countries.

According to Energy Minister Leila Benali, the broader project will cost more than $20 billion and will link Morocco with Mauritania and Senegal as part of the first phase.

A new investment announcement expected later this month will cover a section connecting Nador Port in northern Morocco to Dakhla in the south.

The pipeline will pass through 11 African nations, supplying nearly 30 billion cubic feet of gas daily to countries in Africa, as well as Morocco and Europe.

Several investment institutions and infrastructure funds have shown interest in backing the project, which promises returns above 12 percent.
