Eni, in partnership with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) through the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture, has started hydrocarbon production from the Sabratha Compression Project.
The offshore project is a key part of Eni’s efforts to maximize production from the Bahr Essalam field and maintain long-term gas output.
The Sabratha Compression Project involved installing a new 1,600-ton compression module on the Sabratha platform. The module includes new compression trains with a combined compression capacity of about 440 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd).
The new compression system enables production under low-pressure conditions, helping increase gas recovery from the maturing Bahr Essalam field. It is expected to add around 800 million cubic meters of gas per year, along with associated condensate. The additional output will support Libya’s electricity generation, strengthen the country’s energy security, and supply gas exports to Italy through the Greenstream pipeline.
By completing the technically demanding Sabratha Compression Project, Eni and NOC have strengthened Libya’s gas infrastructure and supported the continued development of the country’s energy sector.
Eni and NOC are also advancing two other major projects in Libya. Tie-in and commissioning activities are underway at the Bouri Gas Utilization Project following the installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module. Work is also progressing on the Structures A&E project, which will develop two offshore gas fields.
Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and remains the country’s largest international energy operator. The company expects equity production of about 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025 and is currently executing three development projects with a combined investment of about $10 billion.
