Exxon Mobil announced that it has signed an agreement with the Gabonese government to explore offshore oil and gas reserves along the country’s Central African coast.

The memorandum of understanding, a non-binding deal, signals Exxon’s renewed push to expand its footprint across Africa. The U.S. energy giant already operates in Nigeria, Angola, and Mozambique but decided to withdraw from Equatorial Guinea in 2022.

According to an Exxon spokesperson, the company will collaborate closely with Gabon’s government to assess deepwater and ultra-deepwater blocks for potential oil and gas development, aiming to strengthen Gabon’s offshore energy prospects.
