Eni has entered The Gambia’s upstream oil and gas sector after signing a petroleum exploration, development, and production license agreement for offshore Block A1 with the Gambian government.
Gambia’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Nani Juwara, signed the agreement, granting Eni exploration rights to the deepwater Block A1, which spans about 1,300 square kilometres offshore.
Block A1 is located in water depths of between 1,250 and 3,300 meters within the Atlantic Margin, an area that has drawn increasing industry attention following several hydrocarbon discoveries in recent years.
The award gives Eni its first presence in The Gambia and extends the company’s exploration activities across West Africa.
Eni said the licence supports its strategy of maintaining a geographically diverse exploration portfolio across established hydrocarbon regions, emerging basins and frontier areas with resource potential.
The company added that Block A1 lies in a relatively underexplored section of the Atlantic Margin that has shown hydrocarbon potential and could support future exploration efforts.
