Eni North Africa and its partners, including Libya’s National Oil Corporation, BP, and the Libyan Investment Authority, have started drilling their first deepwater exploration well offshore in the Gulf of Sirte. The project marks a new phase in offshore exploration in Libyan waters.

The National Oil Corporation said the drilling is taking place using a drilling vessel owned by the Italian energy services company Saipem. Saipem’s involvement brings deepwater technical experience to the operation, which is considered one of the more complex offshore activities in the region.

The well sits in Contract Area 38/3 offshore the Gulf of Sirte, in waters about 1,900 meters deep. Drilling is expected to reach a total depth of roughly 4,500 meters, as NOC noted, as partners assess the area’s hydrocarbon potential and future development prospects.
