Egypt plans to install 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity across its industrial sector over the next two years. The country will pursue this goal through the newly launched Industry Solar Initiative, which will support the installation of rooftop solar systems on factories and industrial facilities nationwide.
The initiative forms part of Egypt’s wider efforts to expand clean energy use, cut carbon emissions, and strengthen energy security for industries. By integrating more renewable energy into manufacturing operations, Egypt aims to reduce its reliance on conventional power sources while supporting long-term industrial development.
Egypt’s Minister of Industry, Khaled Hashem, recently met with Chitose Noguchi, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to discuss the plans. Their discussions focused on expanding cooperation between the government and international partners to encourage renewable energy adoption and support Egypt’s sustainable development objectives.
The UNDP and Egypt’s Industrial Modernization Center are supporting the implementation of the Industry Solar Initiative. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is providing financial support for the programme as part of its broader commitment to renewable energy development in Egypt.
The initiative builds on previous progress in distributed solar energy deployment. Earlier projects carried out through the partnership led to the installation of grid-connected solar systems on commercial, residential, public, and tourism-related buildings. Those projects helped increase the use of solar energy across multiple sectors and laid the groundwork for further expansion.
