A $7.9 billion green hydrogen project is underway in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, backed by China.

Chinese and Nigerian representatives have committed to developing the project within the Liberty Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) at Atabrikang in Ibeno Local Government Area.

Officials signed the agreement in Uyo, Nigeria, bringing together the Federal Government, APPL Hydrogen Limited (AHL), and China’s LONGi Green Energy Technology.

Idara Ekpo, Chief Visionary Officer of AHL, announced that the project could generate 1.2 million metric tons of green hydrogen-based methanol annually for export, along with medical oxygen and food-grade CO₂.

Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, stated that the initiative advances the country’s decarbonization efforts.

Alhaji Bamange Usman Jada, Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority, emphasized that the project will boost Nigeria’s economy, promote exports, and address foreign exchange challenges.

He also highlighted that the initiative will facilitate technology transfer, create large-scale employment, and support environmental sustainability.

Last month, the Energy Industries Council (EIC) reported that Africa has 41 hydrogen projects set for development within five years, but none have reached a final investment decision (FID).

EIC’s Africa OPEX Report identified key obstacles such as securing reliable offtake agreements, establishing a strong regulatory framework, and developing resilient infrastructure.
