BP’s Senegal-Mauritania LNG project is preparing to load its first cargo within weeks, according to junior partner Kosmos Energy.

The BP-led Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project commenced LNG production earlier this year, as Kosmos Energy reported in its 2024 earnings release.

Kosmos Energy stated that the first LNG cargo is expected later this quarter, with an LNG tanker already positioned at the Hub Terminal, ready for loading.

The company noted that revenue recognition for the project will begin once the first cargo is loaded.

Earlier this month, Kosmos Energy confirmed that the GTA project had started delivering natural gas to the floating LNG vessel and initiated liquefaction.

On December 31, 2024, gas from GTA’s first phase began flowing from wells to the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel as part of the commissioning process.

BP has instructed the offtaker, BP Gas Marketing Ltd., to dispatch an LNG carrier later this quarter for the first export.

The project’s launch is expected to bolster the economies of Senegal and Mauritania while also contributing to global LNG supply at a crucial time when Europe is depleting its gas storage and securing supplies for the upcoming winter.

Originally slated for production in 2023, the GTA project has experienced some delays in recent years.

The first phase of Greater Tortue Ahmeyim will produce LNG from significant natural gas discoveries made offshore Senegal and Mauritania in 2015.

Phase 1 is expected to produce approximately 2.3 million tons of LNG annually, with the project set to operate for more than 20 years, positioning Senegal and Mauritania as a key global LNG hub, according to BP.
