Algeria is building a 200-megawatt solar power plant in the Gara Djebilet area of Tindouf province as part of its plan to grow renewable energy use and support development in the southern regions.
Mustapha Benabdelkader, the provincial Director of Energy, said work is moving quickly and that the project will improve electricity supply for major economic sites, including the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine.
He explained that the first phase will connect through two 30-kilovolt lines tied to an existing station, while future stages will add high-voltage transmission lines of 120 to 130 kilovolts to meet rising demand.
Developers are constructing the facility at a junction linking the national highway to the Gara Djebilet base, alongside a large distribution station intended to power several industrial units planned for the area.
Benabdelkader said the plant will help meet the energy needs of processing operations and support a reliable power supply for industrial activities and related infrastructure.
The project will also supply electricity to Tindouf City as it grows, address seasonal demand increases, and serve the border crossing, the free zone, and other upcoming developments across the province.
He added that authorities plan a second gas turbine power plant and another solar project with a combined capacity of 360 megawatts to ensure stable energy coverage for provincial and economic needs.
Officials designed the initiative to provide dependable power for mining and processing operations while cutting reliance on conventional sources and reducing costs over time.
Authorities linked the project to the government’s strategy under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to integrate renewable energy into major national investments, especially in high solar potential regions like Tindouf.
The development also shows Algeria’s intention to strengthen the economy, expand renewable capacity, and pursue growth while addressing environmental considerations through diversification efforts.
