The Nigerian government has signed an agreement to set up a 1,000-megawatt solar panel manufacturing plant in the country.

The facility will boost local production, reduce reliance on imports, and support Nigeria’s shift to cleaner energy.

The signing took place at the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp) office in Abuja. The deal involves the Rural Electrification Agency, InfraCorp, and Dutch company Solarge BV, which together formed Solarge Nigeria Limited to run the project.

Under the arrangement, Solarge BV will own 49 percent of the company, while InfraCorp and REA will hold 26 percent and 25 percent.

Officials explained that the ownership structure is designed to attract investment, ensure oversight, and promote transfer of technology.

They also said the project ties in with the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative and the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, both aimed at expanding clean energy access for public institutions and supporting local industry.
