Mozambique’s president said construction on TotalEnergies’ LNG project will restart by September, with production targeted between 2029 and 2030.

The project, valued at $20 billion and involving Mitsui & Co., was suspended in 2021 after Islamist militants launched an attack.

TotalEnergies has insisted on security guarantees, which Western partners and neighboring countries are now strengthening.

The LNG development is seen as vital for Asian energy security, with potential to supply up to a fifth of Japan’s annual demand through agreements with Jera, Tokyo Gas, and Taiwan’s CPC.

Japan is supporting the project through loans and investments facilitated by government agencies.

By the 2030s, Mozambique could produce more than 30 million tons of LNG each year, placing it among the world’s top four exporters after the United States, Australia, and Qatar.

“Mozambique’s gas will serve not only Mozambique but also the world,” President Chapo emphasized.
