TotalEnergies EP South Africa SAS (TEEPSA) will conduct exploration in the Deep Western Orange Basin (DWOB) off South Africa’s West Coast, about 211 km from Saldanha Bay, in water depths ranging from 500 to 3,900 meters.

SLR Consulting Ltd. stated that TEEPSA plans an exploration well drilling campaign in the DWOB block. SLR listed TEEPSA as its client.

TEEPSA’s oil and gas exploration area of interest spans 15,000 sq km. The campaign includes plans to drill up to seven exploration or appraisal wells. The work program also covers vertical seismic profiling (VSP), testing, and plugging and abandonment activities.

The 3,000 sq km DWOB block lies adjacent to Namibia in the north and PEL 39, where TotalEnergies, Shell, Galp Energia SGPS SA, and Africa Oil Corp. have made discoveries.

The Orange Basin Deep block forms part of the same offshore basin as Namibia’s major Venus and Graff discoveries. It shares several geological plays with these fields. Two main levels of prospectivity exist: a deeper Lower Cretaceous zone with Aptian-aged basin floor fans, similar to the Venus discovery, and an Upper Cretaceous zone with Graff-equivalent leads that share the same trapping mechanisms.

Before beginning exploration, TEEPSA must secure Environmental Authorization from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR).

TEEPSA operates the DWOB block with a 40% stake. Its partners include QatarEnergy (30%), Sezigyn Pty. (20%), and Petrobras (10%).
