Senegal has started refining its own fuel for the first time at a refinery near Dakar, the operating company announced.

Although the African Refinery Company (SAR) was founded in 1961, it had only processed imported oil until now.

SAR proudly announced that it successfully refined Senegal’s first domestically produced crude oil from the Sangomar field.

After completing the refining process with positive results, SAR has transported the produced materials, including heating oil and diesel, to designated storage facilities.

Since 8th February 2025, the company has refined 650,000 barrels of crude oil, yielding 90,000 metric tons of products such as diesel, kerosene, petrol, and butane gas.

Senegal began oil production in June at the Sangomar field, operated by Australian company Woodside Energy.

The country also started producing gas in late December from a shared field with Mauritania along their maritime border.

Senegal’s oil and gas production will support both exports and domestic consumption but remains far below the levels of major producers like Nigeria.

Despite this, the country expects to generate billions of dollars in revenue and accelerate economic transformation.
