Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has visited Nigeria’s Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State, to discuss a partnership that would strengthen technical training in Ghana’s oil and gas sector.

Ghana plans to establish its own petroleum training centre and hopes to draw on Nigeria’s more than five decades of experience in developing oil and gas professionals.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of PTI’s Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Samuel Onoji, the Director of Research and Development, Dr Tina Isechei, said the institute was ready to work with Ghana on a mutually beneficial partnership.

Isechei said PTI was established in 1972 to train technical personnel for Nigeria’s growing oil and gas industry. She added that the institute has trained more than 50,000 people who now work across the industry in Nigeria and other countries.

She highlighted PTI’s NBTE-certified curriculum, specialized facilities, and experienced instructors. Its training areas include welding and fabrication, drilling and well control, National Skills Qualification certification, firefighting, underwater welding and research.

Isechei also invited the Ghanaian delegation to attend PTI’s Annual International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science and Technology, which has supported industry training since 2023. She offered to arrange a tour of the institute’s training facilities.

Dr Joseph Wilson, Director of Research at Ghana’s NPA and leader of the delegation, described the visit as an opportunity to learn from Nigeria’s experience.

Wilson said Ghana chose Nigeria as a partner because of the countries’ longstanding ties and the need for stronger cooperation across Africa.

He said the proposed partnership would cover legal frameworks, technical assistance, stakeholder engagement, consultancy, professional training and capacity development.

The proposed partnership could help Ghana develop its own petroleum training center while strengthening technical cooperation between the two countries. However, its impact will depend on how both sides translate the discussions into a practical training program and a clear implementation plan.
