The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) has invited bids from local and international companies to develop a 20 MW/40 MWh grid-forming battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Luwinga Substation in Mzuzu City, Malawi. The project aims to improve electricity supply reliability, stabilize the power grid, and enhance electricity delivery across the country’s northern region. The contract will cover the design, procurement, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of the battery storage system, as well as its operation, maintenance, and eventual transfer. The successful contractor must complete the project within 24 months.
ESCOM has opened the tender to eligible local and international companies under its International Competitive Bidding process. The corporation is seeking contractors with the technical expertise and experience required to deliver the battery energy storage project.
Interested bidders can inspect the official tender documents at ESCOM’s Procurement Office in Blantyre. Companies can purchase the complete bidding documents from the accounts office for a non-refundable fee of MK50,000, payable in cash or by bank-certified check.
ESCOM will hold a non-mandatory pre-bid meeting on October 19, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the project site in Luwinga, Mzuzu. The meeting will give interested companies an opportunity to understand the technical requirements and scope of work before submitting their bids.
