Dangote to Begin Construction of Lamu Oil Refinery in October

The construction of Dangote’s proposed oil refinery in Lamu will begin in October, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said.

Dangote told the BBC that the project will cost about Sh2 trillion, down from the initial estimate of Sh2.2 trillion.

“We will break ground in October this year. Once we break ground, construction will begin,” Dangote said.

The refinery will process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making it the largest refinery in East Africa and the second-largest in Africa after Dangote’s refinery in Lagos, Nigeria.

Dangote announced plans in April to expand his refining operations into East Africa, with the Lamu refinery based on the model of his Nigerian facility.

The refinery will supply refined petroleum products to Kenya and neighbouring markets, including Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reducing their reliance on imported refined products.
