The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation says it will start exporting a new light, sweet crude grade known as Cawthorne from March, a move that reflects a gradual rebound in output from Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil exporter.
The government is pushing to raise production levels that have suffered for years due to insecurity and crude theft, and it has already introduced two additional crude grades since 2024. With output nearing its quota under OPEC, the country is also positioning itself to argue for a higher production target within the group.
Sources indicate that exporters expect to ship Cawthorne crude by the third week of March, and its API gravity of 36.4 places it in a similar quality range to Bonny Light, a grade known for producing strong gasoline and diesel yields.
