The Egyptian Council of Ministers has approved Dubai-based AMEA Power’s plan to connect 2 GW of renewable energy to Egypt’s grid by summer 2025. This includes expanding the under-construction Abydos solar project by an additional 500 MW, bringing its total capacity to 1 GW.

Moreover, a combined capacity of 1.5 GW from both solar and wind energy will be connected to the national electricity grid. In addition to 1 GW of solar capacity, AMEA Power is building the 500 MW Amunet wind farm in Ras Ghareb, which is expected to go online in the summer of 2025. The capacity that will be added also includes a battery energy storage system (BESS).

By the end of 2023, wind power accounted for 2.7% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.6 GW and generated 2.8% of its electricity, producing 6.7 TWh. Solar power made up 3% of the installed capacity with 1.8 GW and contributed 1.9% to power generation, producing 4.4 TWh. Egypt aims to have 42% of its electricity come from renewables by 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
