BW Energy has signed a contract to mobilize the Deepsea Mira semi-submersible rig for drilling the Kharas appraisal well on the Kudu license, located offshore in Namibia’s Orange Basin. The move follows a previously announced platform-sharing agreement between Northern Ocean Ltd., the operator of the rig, and Rhino Resources Ltd.

The rig will be deployed through BW Kudu Ltd., a subsidiary of BW Energy, giving the company access to a rig already present in Namibia along with a technical team experienced in the region. The agreement also emphasizes local content, aiming to integrate Namibian professionals into the project.

The upcoming Kharas appraisal well is designed to evaluate the gas production potential of the Kudu field. Drilling is scheduled for the second half of 2025 as part of Namibia’s broader push to advance gas exploration and resource assessment.

BW Energy holds a 95% operating stake in the Kudu license, while NAMCOR E&P, the exploration arm of Namibia’s national oil company, retains a 5% carried interest. By partnering with Rhino Resources Ltd., BW Energy is maximizing use of the Deepsea Mira and streamlining logistics.

This collaboration between BW Energy, NAMCOR E&P, Northern Ocean Ltd., and Rhino Resources Ltd. is focused on delivering efficient offshore operations while meeting high technical standards. The Kudu project continues to draw attention for its potential to drive new commercial partnerships around Namibia’s gas sector.
