Cameroon has officially begun building a new oil refinery and petroleum reserve depot in the southern region, as announced by the state-owned National Hydrocarbons Corporation (SNH).
The refinery is taking shape on a large plot of land within the Kribi industrial port area, where SNH’s representative, Nathalie Moudiki, spoke on behalf of the executive general manager during the inauguration ceremony.
She noted that the fuel storage facility will begin operations with a substantial holding capacity.
The facility is being developed to handle the country’s own crude oil and help cut down the volume of imported fuel, according to SNH.
The construction phase is set to last over a year, and once completed, the refinery will become the country’s second.
Cameroon’s only existing refinery, located in Limbe, has remained inactive since a major fire incident, forcing the country to depend on fuel imports ever since.
