QatarEnergy has obtained rights to explore oil and gas onshore in Algeria following its participation in the 2024 Algeria Bid Round, marking its debut in the country’s upstream industry.
ALNAFT, Algeria’s agency for managing hydrocarbon resources, announced the winning bids and granted the Ahara Block to a consortium of companies including QatarEnergy (24.5%), TotalEnergies (24.5% and operator during exploration), and Sonatrach (51%).
QatarEnergy’s President and CEO, H.E. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, expressed excitement over securing the Ahara Block and emphasized that this opportunity strengthens the company’s presence in Africa’s energy landscape.
He extended his appreciation to the Algerian Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, as well as ALNAFT, for organizing the bid and expressed optimism about working closely with Sonatrach, TotalEnergies, and local authorities during the exploration phase.
The Ahara Block, located in eastern Algeria, sits strategically between the well-known Berkine and Illizi Basins and spans roughly 14,900 square kilometers.
