Egypt has completed the construction of the 500-megawatt Kom Ombo solar power plant, now the country’s largest solar photovoltaic facility. Built by China Energy Construction, the plant is located in Aswan Governorate and plays a key role in advancing Egypt’s Vision 2030 for clean and sustainable energy.

The Kom Ombo facility, with a direct current installed capacity of 560 megawatts, includes over one million solar panels and a 220-kilovolt booster station to ensure efficient power transmission. Once fully operational, it is expected to supply clean electricity to around 256,000 households annually and cut carbon emissions by 760,000 tons each year.

Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao praised the project as a standout example of green cooperation between Egypt and China. He described it as more than just energy infrastructure, calling it a model for future collaboration on sustainable development. He also reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s green transition through continued investment in renewable technologies like solar, wind, hydrogen, and energy storage.

The Kom Ombo solar plant stands as a major milestone in Egypt’s efforts to diversify its energy sources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and build a resilient, environmentally responsible power sector.
