Mabruk Oil Operations restarted production at Libya’s Mabruk oilfield after a ten-year shutdown, the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) announced on Wednesday, 12 March 2025.

Production resumed on Sunday at an initial rate of 5,000 barrels per day, with plans to increase output to 7,000 bpd by the end of March and 25,000 bpd by July.

Operators began transferring crude to the nearby Al-Bahi field on Tuesday to enhance Libya’s oil infrastructure and operational efficiency.

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) previously announced plans to restart the Mabruk oilfield in early 2023, targeting production of up to 25,000 bpd.

NOC shut down the Mabruk oilfield in 2015 following a “terrorist” attack that caused $575 million in equipment losses.

Despite holding Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, Libya has struggled to maintain steady production since 2011 due to internal conflicts and infrastructure damage.

Wednesday’s statement described the restart as a major step for Libya’s oil sector, signaling greater stability and confidence in rebuilding and strengthening the national economy.
