The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, and AMEA Power’s Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, explored opportunities to expand the company’s investments in Egypt’s renewable energy sector, according to an official announcement.
Their discussion took place during the minister’s participation in the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) general assembly and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).
The two leaders examined the latest progress in integrating 300 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage into the 500-megawatt Abydos 1 project, which was launched last month in Aswan.
They also evaluated developments related to the 500-MW wind energy generation project in the Gulf of Suez, with plans to connect the new capacities to the unified grid by early next summer.
Esmat and Al Nowais further discussed the potential addition of up to 1,500 MW to this project using standalone storage batteries, focusing on expediting the project to enhance grid stability and optimize returns from renewable energy.
As part of ongoing collaboration between Egypt’s electricity sector and the UAE-based Al Nowais Group, the officials reviewed implementation progress for the Abydos 2 project, which includes 1,000 MW of solar power and 600 MWh of battery storage.
Esmat emphasized the need to capitalize on natural resources, particularly renewable energy, aiming to increase renewable energy’s share in Egypt’s energy mix to over 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040.
