In its push for new energy sources, Türkiye has sent an exploration vessel into Somali waters to search for oil and gas reserves.
Operated by Turkiye’s state-owned energy firm, TPAO, the vessel will conduct comprehensive seismic surveys in the coming months. Somalia’s government expressed support for Turkiye’s exploration, citing hopes for economic development and energy independence.
While the initiative promises potential benefits, some neighboring countries have raised concerns about its impact on regional maritime boundaries and stability in the Horn of Africa.
This mission supports Türkiye’s goal of expanding its influence and securing energy sources beyond the Mediterranean. Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez emphasized that the project highlights Türkiye’s commitment to Somalia’s growth and to strengthening regional energy.
