Eni has completed the Bouri Gas Utilisation Project (GUP) offshore Libya, with start-up procedures now underway. The project aims to recover associated gas previously flared at the field and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.5 million tonnes annually.
Eni developed the project in partnership with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) through their joint venture, Mellitah Oil & Gas. The project involved installing a new Bouri Gas Recovery Module (GRM) and the infrastructure needed to connect it to existing facilities.
The new facilities will allow operators to recover and process associated gas from the Bouri field, located offshore western Libya, according to Eni’s announcement.
Libya’s NOC said it aims to bring the project online by the end of October, with final commissioning procedures underway.
Once operational, the project is expected to supply approximately 700 million standard cubic meters of additional gas annually to Libya’s domestic market. The additional supply could help meet demand from the power generation sector and make more gas available for export to Europe through the GreenStream pipeline.
The Bouri project forms part of Eni’s wider efforts to increase gas recovery and reduce emissions from its upstream operations in Libya.
Other projects are also underway, including the A&E Structures Project, which aims to bring new offshore gas resources into production for domestic use and export. Eni is also upgrading gas production and transportation infrastructure in the country.
Eni has operated in Libya since 1959. The company recorded average equity production of approximately 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the country in 2025.
