Eni plans to begin drilling up to six development wells in November to supply gas to its new Coral North floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform offshore Mozambique.

Eni expects the project to begin production by 2028, doubling its LNG output to around 7 million metric tonnes per year. Mario Bello, Eni’s Head of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Bello said Mozambique has a strong position in the global gas market because of its location, which allows it to supply Asian LNG buyers without relying on major shipping routes that face geopolitical risks. He pointed to the disruption caused by the Iran war as an example of these risks.

Eni is also exploring plans to build a third floating LNG platform offshore Mozambique, supported by the country’s large gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin. The company has begun early-stage engineering work to assess the project.

Bello said Eni is assessing different aspects of the proposed third platform, which could have a production capacity of more than 5 million tonnes per year. The company will use the findings to prepare for a final investment decision, although it has not announced a timeline.
