Uganda has started commercial operations at the 24-MWp Ituka solar project, developed by Dubai-based renewable energy company AMEA Power, after the recent energisation of its substation. Located in Uleppi, Madi Okollo District, in the West Nile region, the solar plant is now supplying electricity to the national grid through its offtaker, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL). The milestone comes about two years after the project broke ground in August 2024.
Uganda’s West Nile region now has its first solar PV plant, while the project also marks AMEA Power’s first operational asset in the country. The company expects the solar park to generate 53,940 MWh of electricity annually, helping improve grid reliability and support industrial development in the region.
The USD 27 million (EUR 23.4 million) project was financed through a combination of debt and equity from AMEA Power and the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF).
