Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has strengthened its position in the global energy market by becoming Europe’s largest jet fuel supplier for the second consecutive month. It has outperformed traditional exporters such as the United States and now supplies about one-fifth of Europe’s total jet fuel imports.
The development highlights the refinery’s growing role in international fuel markets and Nigeria’s increasing presence in global refined petroleum trade.
According to local media reports citing the latest European import data from global commodities intelligence firm Kpler, Dangote’s 700,000 barrels per day refinery supplied more than 400,000 tonnes of jet fuel to Europe, accounting for about 20 per cent of the continent’s total jet fuel imports.
The refinery previously recorded 466,000 tonnes of jet fuel exports to Europe, when Nigeria overtook the United States as the region’s leading supplier.
The sustained exports show that the refinery can consistently supply the European aviation fuel market while meeting strict international quality standards.
Europe imported about 2.06 million tonnes of jet fuel, with Dangote providing the largest share. The refinery supplied more than traditional exporters in the United States and the Middle East.
Industry observers say Dangote is changing established fuel trade routes in the Atlantic Basin by providing European buyers with another competitive source of jet fuel.
European buyers have traditionally depended on refiners in the United States, the Middle East and Asia. However, Dangote’s location on Nigeria’s Atlantic coast, large-scale operations, modern technology and export capacity have helped it become an increasingly important supplier of aviation fuel to Europe.
Rising production has supported the refinery’s export growth. Jet fuel loadings at Dangote’s Lekki export terminal in Lagos reached a record 550,000 tonnes, while crude deliveries to the refinery climbed to 660,000 barrels per day. These volumes have helped the refinery maintain higher exports of refined petroleum products.
The development comes as global energy trade continues to shift. Europe received limited jet fuel supplies from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, while disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and changing geopolitical conditions pushed buyers to diversify their sources.
Dangote Refinery has responded to this shift by becoming a reliable supplier to the European market, strengthening Nigeria’s role in the global refined petroleum products trade.
Beyond aviation fuel, the refinery also exports diesel, gasoline and other refined petroleum products to markets across Europe, Africa and other regions. These exports are helping Nigeria increase its role as a supplier of higher-value refined petroleum products.
