Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) has announced that its planned oil refinery in Kenya will have the capacity to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The project represents a significant milestone in the company’s plan to expand across Africa and improve fuel supply in East Africa.
In a statement, Dangote Group said the proposed refinery will supply refined petroleum products to East African markets as the company continues to grow its presence in the region’s energy industry.
The company made the announcement through Dangote Industries’ Group Vice President for Oil and Gas, Devakumar Edwin, during a visit by officials from the Republic of the Congo’s national oil company to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos on July 1.
Edwin said the company plans to refine 1.4 million barrels of crude oil per day in Nigeria and another 700,000 barrels per day in Kenya to meet demand in East Africa. Once completed, the new refinery will increase Dangote Group’s total refining capacity to 2.1 million barrels per day.
The announcement follows earlier comments by Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote, who revealed plans to develop a new refinery in East Africa. The project was initially proposed for Tanzania’s Tanga Port before the company shifted its focus to Kenya, considering Mombasa and Lamu as potential locations.
Dangote said the decision to move the project was based on better maritime access, stronger infrastructure, and higher market demand. He later identified Lamu as another possible site while the company continues to assess the most suitable location for the refinery.
Kenyan President William Ruto said governments across the region will also support the project through investment, with Kenya committing KSh 21.5 billion in seed funding.
The proposed KSh 2.5 trillion refinery will supply Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, and other East African markets. The project aims to reduce the region’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products and strengthen energy security against global supply disruptions.
