ENI confirms two new gas discoveries in Libya following an exploration campaign carried out in recent months. The company successfully drilled two nearby geological structures, Bahr Essalam South 2 (BESS 2) and Bahr Essalam South 3 (BESS 3), through the B2-16/4 and C1-16/4 wells. These wells lie about 85 km offshore in water depths of roughly 650 feet and around 16 km south of the Bahr Essalam gas field.

Both wells encountered gas-bearing intervals within the Metlaoui Formation, which serves as the main productive reservoir in the area. Data collected during drilling show the presence of a high-quality reservoir, and testing carried out on the first well confirmed its productive capacity.

Initial estimates suggest that the BESS 2 and BESS 3 structures together hold more than 1 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. Because the discoveries sit close to the Bahr Essalam field, the country’s largest offshore gas field operating since 2005, ENI plans to develop them quickly by connecting them to existing offshore infrastructure. The company intends to supply the produced gas to Libya’s domestic market while exporting part of the volumes to Italy.
