Chad’s capital welcomed the start of operations at the Noor Chad 50 MW solar plant, marking a shift in the country’s energy landscape.

Located on the outskirts of N’Djamena, its 81,000 solar panels and 158 inverters work with a 5MWh battery system to manage fluctuations. Workers logged over 350,000 safe hours to complete the site.

Even though weak transmission lines and delayed transformer upgrades currently limit the plant to feeding about 12 MW into the grid, it still represents a major step forward for a country that had less than 2 MW of total solar capacity before.

Abu Dhabi–based Global South Utilities (GSU) developed and operates the project, which sets the stage for more than 270,000 homes to benefit as the grid strengthens.
