The Federal Government and the Foundation for Sustainable Social Responsibility in Emerging Africa (FOSSREA) have signed an agreement to develop hydrogen.

Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Oluwakemi Ogunmakinwa, says in a statement that the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Nicholas Agbo Ella, describes the signing of the agreement as a turning point in Nigeria’s engagement on hydrogen matters and acknowledges it as the future fuel.

Ambassador Ella said his meeting with the German Embassy upon resumption of office revealed how far the country had advanced with hydrogen production and expressed optimism over the availability of a partner to foster hydrogen development.

Ella stated that the need to engage FOSSREA in the conversation around hydrogen was paramount, noting that, going forward, the Ministry, through a Local Organising Committee (LOC), would be liaising with FOSSREA so that “we can research, harmonize, and exchange ideas that will benefit Nigeria. Hydrogen being the fuel of the future is revolutionizing activities in many spaces and climates, and Nigeria cannot be left behind,” he added.

The Chairman of FOSSREA, Mr. Aliu Hydar Mijinyawa, remarked that hydrogen was a global key fuel of the future and noted that, already, many countries, even in Africa, were ahead in deploying hydrogen and were enjoying millions of dollars of investment.

He urged Nigeria to take advantage of the hydrogen economy, prioritising it as an important project beneficial to the nation.

He confirmed that experts from both within and outside Nigeria will be consulted to share their expertise and knowledge and to brainstorm on establishing a hydrogen foundation in the country.
