The government of Côte d’Ivoire has partnered with PFO Africa, a subsidiary of PFO Energies, to sign a concession agreement and a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This historic collaboration signifies a major milestone, as it enables the planning, funding, construction, operation, and transfer of a massive 52 MWp photovoltaic solar power plant.plant. It is worth noting that this initiative represents the largest independent power producer (IPP) construction project for a solar power plant in Ivory Coast.
Known as the FERKE SOLAR project, it exemplifies the dynamic nature of public-private partnerships in Ivory Coast, aligning with the national sustainable development plan’s objectives to augment electricity production capacities. The signing ceremony, held on January 24, 2024, involved key representatives, including Mr. Mamadou SANGAFOWA-COULIBALY, Minister of Mines, Oil, and Energy; Mr. Clyde FAKHOURY, General Administrator of PFO AFRICA Group; and Ahmadou BAKAYOKO, General Director of the Ivorian Electricity Company (CIE).
Situated in Sokhoro, Tchologo region, in the north of the country, the solar power plant plays a pivotal role in Côte d’Ivoire’s journey towards energy independence and aligning with COP26 goals. With an investment of 39.5 billion CFA francs (60 million euros), the plant is expected to generate 90 GWh of clean energy annually from its first year of commissioning, supplying electricity to over 370,000 residents.
The commencement of construction is slated for the second half of 2024, spanning a duration of 14 months. The FERKE SOLAR project is anticipated to create over 165 direct jobs during both the construction and operation phases. Additionally, it aims to contribute to community and social development projects for Sokhoro and the Tchologo region.
Underscoring their dedication to sustainable development in Africa, Mr. Clyde Fakoury, General Administrator of the PFO Africa Group, emphasized that the agreement reflects their active engagement in the aspirations of both the country and the continent. This collaboration reinforces the shared commitment of both entities to lead the way in renewable energy initiatives in Ivory Coast.
