Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) and Polish company Hynfra are collaborating to build a $1.6 billion facility dedicated to green ammonia production, aiming to position Egypt as a leader in the global green energy sector.
The facility’s first phase, scheduled to launch by 2030, will produce 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, with plans to scale up production to one million tonnes per year in subsequent phases. This project advances Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions while establishing the country as a key supplier of green ammonia to the European Union.
Hynfra, aiming to establish five green ammonia plants in Central and Eastern Europe, selected Egypt as the flagship location for its first project.
Key stakeholders, including Hossam Heiba, Tomoho Umeda (Hynfra’s founder and CEO), Engineer Dr. Hussein El-Ghazawy (Hynfra’s executive partner in Egypt), and Ministerial Commercial Counselor Yehia El-Wathik Bellah, gathered to announce the project during a meeting.
The facility will rely entirely on renewable energy harnessed from Egypt’s abundant solar and wind resources, with any surplus electricity directed into the national grid to support Egypt’s renewable energy targets.Alongside green ammonia production, Hynfra plans to bring advanced technologies to Egypt, such as green hydrogen production, energy storage systems, and water desalination.
Hynfra’s green hydrogen production process uses water electrolysis to create hydrogen, which is then combined with nitrogen to produce green ammonia, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy.
The facility’s green ammonia output will be exported to the European Union under long-term agreements, supporting the EU’s sustainable energy supply strategy.
President Heiba emphasized Egypt’s push to become a regional hub for green hydrogen and ammonia through initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Production Projects Incentives Law and the establishment of the National Council for Green Hydrogen.
Egypt’s ‘golden license’ program is streamlining the approval process for strategic projects to ensure swift and efficient execution.
During the meeting, stakeholders discussed potential plant locations with access to renewable energy and proximity to export ports, aligning with the EU’s target of importing 6 million tonnes of green hydrogen and 4 million tonnes of green ammonia by 2030.
President Heiba pledged GAFI’s full support for the project, from securing permits to ensuring smooth operations, marking a major milestone in advancing sustainable energy initiatives in Egypt and Europe.
