Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, President of Egypt, has directed the provision of all necessary infrastructure to hasten the implementation of green energy projects carried out in partnership with Fortescue Future Industries, a company based in Australia (FFI).
El-Sisi made the comments on Saturday while receiving Andrew Forrest, the chairman of the FFI, according to a statement from presidential spokesman Bassam Rady.
El-Sisi highlighted the importance of benefiting from the Australian energy company’s extensive expertise in green energy, as Egypt attaches importance to keeping pace with the international orientation toward maximising the use of renewable energy.
This also comes within the framework of the Egyptian national strategy to boost the supply of electricity generated from renewables in light of the state’s keenness to diversify the sources of electricity and benefit from the country’s natural resources.
Egypt’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) aims to increase the supply of renewable electricity by 42 percent by 2035.
The meeting followed up on cooperation between FFI and the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in the fields of green hydrogen and green ammonia, including a project to produce 9.2 GW of electricity from renewable energy, the spokesman said.
The meeting also followed up on local industries related to generating power from wind turbines and solar cells, the spokesman added.
Forrest, for his part, emphasized FFI’s eagerness to work with Egypt on developing green energy and utilizing green hydrogen as a clean energy source.
Tarek El-Molla, the minister of petroleum and mineral resources, Mohamed Shaker, the minister of electricity and renewable energy, and Moataz Kandil, the regional director of FFI for the Middle East and North Africa, all attended the meeting.
