The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has made a significant advancement in enhancing Somalia’s energy infrastructure through the inauguration of a newly financed solar project. Serving as a symbol of sustainable energy, the project boasts a formidable production capacity of 3.5 megawatts, with a focused aim on meeting the electricity needs of Bosaso, the vibrant commercial hub in the state of Puntland.

This solar plant not only addresses energy requirements but also actively confronts the complex challenges posed by climate change, all while simultaneously reducing electricity production costs. By substantially increasing the utilisation of renewable energy sources, it aims to pave the way for a greener and more economically viable future for the nation. Notably, the project is anticipated to generate employment opportunities and catalyse economic growth within the region.

The ceremonial inauguration witnessed the presence of His Excellency Ahmed Juma Al Rumaithi, Ambassador of the UAE to Somalia, alongside key officials from the Puntland government, underscoring the collaborative efforts invested in this transformative endeavour.

H.E. Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, reiterated the UAE’s steadfast commitment to global renewable energy initiatives. He emphasised, “The launch of the solar energy station in Somalia aligns with the UAE’s ongoing efforts to promote renewable energy globally, address climate change challenges, and preserve the environment.”

Highlighting the profound impact envisaged, Al Suwaidi stressed the project’s pivotal role in delivering reliable and affordable clean energy to the residents of Puntland and adjoining areas, directly addressing the energy scarcity prevalent in numerous villages and rural pockets across Somalia. Additionally, the solar plant is poised to significantly curtail carbon emissions within the country.

Echoing these sentiments, H.E. Ahmed Juma Al Rumaithi emphasised the paramount importance of bilateral relations between the UAE and Somalia. He reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to steering sustainable development initiatives in Somalia, aiming to enhance livelihoods and stimulate economic activities within communities. Al Rumaithi noted that the solar energy station would play a pivotal role in reducing overall energy production costs, marking a significant stride towards sustainable development.

Anticipated to assuage the escalating demand for electricity and bolster economic growth in Bosaso, the solar plant exemplifies the UAE’s unwavering commitment to advancing environmental sustainability and fostering economic prosperity within Somalia.

The solar plant project in the Puntland region includes a thorough setup that actively involves supplying, installing, and maintaining state-of-the-art conversion and control units. ADFD funds this project to actively align with its overarching goal of strengthening strategic sectors such as agriculture, industry, transport, and renewable energy, thereby propelling socio-economic progress in Somalia.
