According to a senior Senegalese energy official, final investment decisions should be reached for the Yakaar-Teranga project and phase 2 of Senegal’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project before the end of the year.

According to President Macky Sall’s advisor Mamadou Fall Kane, “We are working to get an FID by September for phase 2 (at GTA), which should double estimated production from 2.5 million tonnes per year to 5 million tonnes per year.”.

By the end of 2023, the first phase of GTA, which crosses the border between Senegal and Mauritania, will start supplying gas, according to Kane.

He said that a recent decision by the European Union to classify investments in gas as “climate-friendly” would make it simpler to seek funding.

BP (BP.L) and U.S.-listed Kosmos Energy (KOS.N) are leading the development of GTA and Yakaar-Teranga, Senegal’s first natural gas projects

Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, stated in May that Senegal and Germany should work together on gas and renewable energy projects as the conflict in Ukraine drives Senegal to seek out new energy sources.
